Problems Encountered: There were many problems that I encountered during this unit in DTM. In Term 1 the first major problem was that I couldn’t get the photos of chafers skate Park that we needed for our brief to go onto my blog because I took them from my phone. So me, Jack and Will went back there in our spare time to re-take the photos that we needed. Another major problem was the flax stringers. We spent the whole first term and the beginning of the second term doing them and didn’t end up using them at all. They were just a big time waster that we could’ve spent actually making the long boards. It took so long to actually cut them out and then weave them.
Term 2 I think I had a lot more problems. That’s when we went down to chafers to re-take the pictures, and before we decided not to use the flax for our stringers I lost my flax pile and had to start all over again. It didn’t take long but it was just really annoying. It was also hard trying to keep up with the blog work. I had sometimes left things out or even had to do things again. So that was a pretty big problem. And the research we looked for didn’t even help us really. There wasn’t even much point to doing any of that. And the computer programs like FreeHand MX and SolidWorks. I didn’t know how to use any of those so I had to keep asking for help from the teacher and peers.
When we started the mould process, that was tricky because we had to cut out the shape with a scroll saw and you had to get it perfect otherwise you would screw the whole thing up. Filing it chipped bits off but it was ok after we sanded them down. Terry made us make 6 pieces for the moulds and then get rid of two of them because we only needed 4. I also helped my friends a lot which wasted time for me. That meant I didn’t have enough time to work on my own board when I could’ve had it done sooner.
In Term 3 some problems were even just cutting out the boards after they had been clamped down and moulded. I didn’t want to accidently cut down into my board and ruin everything but I didn’t and it all worked out fine. When we were sanding down our boards though, I accidently chipped a bit off of it. Being away at the start of the term and the end of the term is another problem because it meant I missed out on things. And at the end of this term Terry snapped my board. I had to go back and sand everything again after everyone else was almost up to painting. So when I got back in term 4 I’d be behind everyone else. Sometimes the teacher wouldn’t be there and we’d be in the computer labs and I wouldn’t be able to catch up on my board.
Term 4 we had the problems that worried me most. When we ordered the grip tape, me and Michael got the same grip tape and there wasn’t enough for the both of us to fill both our boards so we had to share.
I had to fix the crack that Terry put in my board; I had to sand it all again which left me behind everyone. When we were putting the base coat onto my board they ran out of the black paint half way through doing it so I had o wait another day. I also couldn’t get the artwork that I wanted onto my board so I had to do something else (which turned out pretty cool).
These were the major problems that I encountered during this unit for DTM and the design process for making longboards.
